Summer Play Schemes
The BBC Children in Need funded play schemes, 'Summer Play' are now in their fourth consecutive year. The scheme runs in all five major estates in Acton and encompasses various creative and physical activities.
Last year proved another succesful year for the project as all estates whole-heartedly participated; vitally this breaks down territorial barriers between near-by segregated estates, giving children the chance to play together and overcome the stereotypes people hold of eachother from different estates.
North Acton Estate was home to the 'Get Out of Bed' club where neighbouring residents came together to bicycle and build go-karts. Older members from the estates served as mentors and helped the younger children by providing essential support to the staff.
Another scheme is the 'Bashley Road Travellers Play Project' which uses specfically trained staff along with ACF staff members to take the children out on field trips inside and outside the community, this gives them a chance to build their confidence and view a world outside their comfort zone.
The summer play schemes will continue for Summer 2010.
